Details

A spectacular architectural and decorative asset, this antique three-panel metal screen bridges the gap between historical functional industrial design and the exotic, tailored allure of early 20th-century European Chinoiserie.

Originally crafted in Italy to elegantly conceal stoves or early radiators, the folding screen features a sturdy sheet-metal construction composed of three hinged panels. The front face is enveloped in a dramatic, dark lacquer, serving as a rich canvas for a continuous, hand-stenciled or painted Orientalist pattern. Gilt borders mimicking traditional fretwork enclose stylized vases bursting with chrysanthemums, scrolling foliage, and graphic bamboo-like lines that beautifully capture the period's obsession with Far Eastern aesthetics. In beautiful material counterpoint, the reverse side is finished in a uniform, minimalist matte black. Whether used for its original purpose or styled independently as a sculptural table screen, a graphic backdrop on a luxury console, or an eclectic gallery asset, its rich, layered surface provides an extraordinary visual depth to contemporary high-end interiors.

Technical Details & Condition:

  • Estimated Period: Early 20th Century (c. 1910-1920).

  • Origin: Italy.

  • Material: Lacquered sheet metal, original iron hinges.

  • Dimensions: 85 cm (maximum fully extended width) x H 107 cm.

  • Condition: Excellent, honest antique condition. The folding iron frame and hinges are perfectly stable and operational. The lacquered surface beautifully preserves its original gold detailing against a deep patinated ground. Fine, authentic signs of organic aging are present, including light surface scratches, localized paint distressing, and a natural, minor patch of oxidized rust on the right panel, which certifiably elevate its non-industrial prestige, historical soul, and unique decorative value.
