Details

The essence of French provincial country life in a beautifully functional, earthy vessel. This large, flared terracotta basin—traditionally known in the South of France as a Tian—dates back to the early 20th century. A staple of rural French kitchens, it was originally used for daily tasks such as washing vegetables, preparing large meals, or kneading dough. It features a beautifully raw, unglazed exterior that boasts a highly tactile, earthy patina. In striking contrast, the interior is sealed with a warm, amber-brown glaze to make it waterproof, a hallmark of utilitarian Mediterranean pottery. The thick, rolled rim shows historical wear that tells the story of its century-old existence. Today, this generous 40 cm bowl makes a spectacular rustic centerpiece on a large kitchen island, perfect for holding fruit, or standing alone as a minimalist, wabi-sabi decorative accent. Technical Details & Condition:

  • Estimated Period: Early 20th Century (1900s).

  • Origin: South of France (Provence region).

  • Material: Terracotta (unglazed exterior, amber-glazed interior).

  • Dimensions: Diameter 40 cm | Height 20 cm.

  • Condition: Very good antique condition. The basin shows a wonderful, authentic patina with expected, honest historical chips along the rolled rim and natural wear to the internal glaze. Structurally sound, heavy, and full of provincial charm.
